Our annual leadership luncheon was held on Thursday, May 1, 2008 in the Omni Hotel in Charlottesville. We honored Erin Gruwell alongside our local young leaders. Erin is a teacher, an author, a spokesperson for equality, and example of leadership for us all. She is best known for her book, The Freedom Writers Diary – How a Teacher and 150 Teens Used Writing to Change Themselves and the World Around Them, which has also been made into a movie, “Freedom Writers.” Erin exemplifies an educational philosophy that values and promotes diversity, which helped her students shatter stereotypes to become critical thinkers, aspiring college students, and citizens for change. We recognized young women leaders from each local high school and had a wonderful event.
Check back at the end of 2008 to read about our speaker and date for the Spring 2009 luncheon.
