The 2015 Women’s Leadership Award winner was famed oceanic explorer, Dr. Sylvia Earle who is called Her Deepness by the New York Times and was named the first Hero for the Planet by Time Magazine. An oceanographer, explorer, author and lecturer, she has a B.S. from Florida State University, M.S. and Ph.D. from Duke University plus 24 honorary degrees and has led more than 100 expeditions, logged more than 7,000 hours underwater (equivalent to 292 days), and set a woman’s solo diving record of 1250 feet. Her special focus is on developing “Hope Spots”, a global network of areas to safeguard living systems in response to accelerating climate change. She is the founder of Deep Ocean Exploration, Mission Blue, the Explorer in Residence of the National Geographic Society and is the author of more than 180 publications, has lectured in over 80 countries and has done hundreds of radio and television appearances. Dr. Earle is married with two children, and lives in California.
